Dogs Don't Cry

Indian stray dog on a street with his head down

Life is a beautiful journey with family, friends, dogs, cats and well wishers making a beeline to a complete extravaganza. We got our priorities straight to maintain an equilibrium and keep negative energies in check. Some of us need a peg or 2 while doing that but it's not upon anybody to judge. Moreover with technology playing an important role in today's daily diaries, things have gotten way too simpler and quicker than it used to be.

Now one don't need to go through the troubles of asking out a girl, he simply downloads Tinder and girls ask him out or he simply flips through
How to find a date! No need to stand in long queues to pay a bill, we just pay it on our smart phones. Want to buy a car from a foreign country, just pay for it on a website and it gets delivered to your door! Hell us Indians have even started using toilet papers & picking our canine poop from the streets now!

The numbers:

Yep life is good for us humans. But what about man's best friend? The four legged furry animal who jumps in joy at a drop of a hat! Well the ones indoors doesn't seem to be complaining. For that matter even the ones out on the roads don't seem to mind after all. But come winters or the harsh summers, these innocent mongrels don't have much to feel happy about. If we talk about numbers, street dogs are estimated around 500 million worldwide. India alone is home to about 30 million strays, which equals to 1 stray mutt per 42 people in the country! Thats a lot of furry friends eh?

The activist:

The so called animal activist do claim they're out to make life better for them but as the clock strikes  8:00 pm an activist doesn't give a single rat's behind. No matter if the pooch is minutes away from a certain death or in agonizing pain, the activist can't get late for her besty's party or a dinner date with that cute guy. Countless posts on social media keeps showing up with Ms activist's day out with the street tail waggers. Emotional titles are given to such post that might just make you shed a tear or 2 for the pups who just lost their mother to a vehicle, but after the post has garnered enough likes reactions and comments, the munchkins are left to fend for themselves ready to face the bitter truth of life in the dark alleys cause the activists has a logic, "they won't survive without their mumma anyways so why bother!"

The conflict:

Too many roving mutts on the road can also not be good for the human population or for themselves for that matter, so the local municipality does need to take an action. Thankfully they do take their job seriously, so they relocate them before they spray and neuter. But thats when the activist rise up in arms and stop them from doing their job & as such the mongrels keeps multiplying. This results in direct conflicts with the humans and leads to unforeseen circumstances wherein both the parties get hurt. Consequently humans goes to the hospitals to get remedial shots and the pooch goes to a terrible facility or worse, meets a barbaric end at the hands of us humans.

The reason:

Things get worse when a mongrel becomes rabid. Figures shows an estimated 20,000 people die each year from rabies infections , accounting for 36% of worldwide rabies deaths. No other countries have ever reached such figures. So why does there are such huge numbers of stray canines? The answer lies in vast open areas dumped with heaps of garbage, coupled with organizations meant to help street dogs, minus any resources. No wonder we have huge hopes from our beloved Modi kaka's 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan'.

The Government role:

The government too time and again have come out with adequate solutions. In the year of 1960, the ministry cleared the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, with a sole objective to put an end to unnecessary/uncalled-for pain, agony & torture to animals. But unfortunately in the next 40 years they realized the street pooch program was a failure and they amended the law they passed in 1960. The strays were pissed that day. Consequently in 2001 they revised the program, so instead of killing'em ,the government would sterilize and then vaccinate them against rabies and later set'em free. Thats when the mongrels in India realized the saying "every puppy has his day" is infact true to its every word!

The Rules also made it illegal to kill'em but as humans have their way, mass killings were reported in various cities down the line. All dogs barked in a melancholic woof woof that day. Finally in 2015 the Supreme Court asked all States and U.Ts to ban the killings & thus the man's best friend finally breathed a sigh of relief and popped open milk bottles!

Interestingly in 2014 the NDMC ( New Delhi Municipal Corporation) came up with a rather effective idea. They announced a less violent policy to deal with the stray breeds in India wherein they will train'em to work with police as guards. In an official statement the chairman said" If the they are going to bum around the roads they might as well do something constructive." The flea bags were back pissed again!

The conclusion:

Hence we prove the fact that time and again we have unloaded truck full of problems on our beloved four legged babies, but they have always ran back to us wagging their tails with love and tonnes of bowwow affection. An odd time they might have given us a bite or rabies but we are ourselves to blame for that infection.

Unless the mutt is a rabid rottweiler or a pittbull then one might as well run for his/her dear life cause once one of these hounds lock their jaws then Jesus himself can't save your sorry behind. But again as we all know its all upon the men/women, how they raise these fierce canines cause without a reason they won't even lift their cute ears. Still, the men on Indian streets will find a reason to hurt these fur babies and they in turn will find every reason to love them back. Yep its true, dogs don't cry ;(
